“Winning is the Science of total preparation!”
– George Allen
Why is it important for an athlete to train during the off-season? Simple, weight training enhances strength and power development. In addition, weight training has been shown to increase muscular contraction, speed, and flexibility. The result is a stronger, faster, quicker athlete, which is beneficial in any anaerobic sport. Unfortunately, some athletes take off-season training for granted and pay the price when the season begins. Those who do train seem to ignore the importance of lower body strength - An Athlete must be able to run, shuffle, jump, and cut. All of these movements are performed primarily through the use of the hips and legs. Therefore, improving our lower body strength and power will be a major emphasis in our workouts. Our off-season conditioning goal is to become better athletes. In order to achieve this goal, we must understand the physical demands of our sport and strive to develop these demands during the conditioning process. The pyramid illustrates how we must train during the summer to prepare for our upcoming seasons.
